As BFW/Marcum continues to grow, so does its commitment to investing in the next generation of engineers. To meet the needs of early-career professionals, Staff Engineer Nikki Gregory and Project Engineer Jase Baker launched the company’s Young Professionals Group (YPG), an initiative aimed at fostering connection, growth, and mentorship for employees 35 and under.
The group meets monthly and blends professional development with community building. Programs like these are increasingly important. Studies show that 79% of young professionals say they want their employer to provide more opportunities for personal and career growth (source). Each session is open to employees across all offices and often includes lunch and learn presentations, casual get-togethers, and interactive games that spark engagement. These kinds of programs can also improve retention; companies with strong learning cultures see 30–50% higher employee engagement and retention rates (source).
A Space to Grow, Together
Baker said the idea for the group came from a need to adapt to the company’s expansion. As he explained, “As more offices are added and our staff count continues to grow, there’s been a shift in our culture. This group was created to embrace that shift. It gives younger employees a place to learn directly from experienced colleagues and connect with peers in similar positions.”
He sees the group as a way to support young professionals in building relationships, developing skills, and growing both personally and professionally. “We want to help the younger community at BFW/Marcum connect beyond work,” Baker said. “The friendships and support that come from this group can push us further in our careers.”
Learning from Leaders
The monthly lunch and learn sessions have become a cornerstone of the group. These events give young employees a chance to hear directly from company leaders on topics that matter most at their stage of life and career.
One standout session featured David Belt, the company’s CFO, who spoke on financial wellness. “It was targeted specifically to our age group, and people said it helped them with budgeting and retirement planning,” Baker said.
Another impactful session came from Executive Vice President Mark Workman. “He hosted a Q&A with questions directly from our group. He shared how he has grown professionally and gave advice that we can apply right away,” Baker added.
Gregory emphasized the value of these sessions as more than just informative talks. “Lunch and Learn sessions offer a supportive environment where younger employees can grow by gaining insights from experienced colleagues. They promote collaboration and help build communication skills and a stronger sense of belonging,” she said.
Strengthening Culture Across Offices
Interactive and informal events have also made a big impact. Gregory pointed to activities like trivia and BFW/Marcum Employee Bingo as highlights. “They’ve been some of our most popular events. Younger employees get to explore the company more deeply and discover facts they may not have known. It strengthens bonds across offices,” she said.
Advice for Newcomers
For those just joining BFW/Marcum, Gregory encourages participation. “Take the time to participate in these events. There’s always something valuable to gain from listening to those around you,” she said. “Building friendships—not just professional relationships—can make you feel more connected and happy at work. That sense of belonging benefits both you and your team.”
