F.A.P. Route 719, US 150 (Bloomington Rd.) Over F.A.I. 74

Bacon Farmer Workman (BFW) took on the challenge of the bridge replacement and roadway rehabilitation required for the F.A.P. Route 719 US 150 (Bloomington Rd.) over F.A.I. 74 project. Two goals were required for the project. The project required removing the existing structure of a 4-span steel beam superstructure with a reinforced concrete deck with open stub abutments on concrete piles and a single hammerhead reinforced concrete piers supported on spread footings, and then, replacing the bridge with a new and improved structure. The new bridge is designed to be larger and more robust with a continuous welded steel plate girder structure on multi-column piers and integral abutments.
- Old Bridge Structure:
- 258′-6″ back-to-back abutments
- 42′-7 ¾” out-to-out deck
- New Bridge Structure:
- 333’-8” back-to-back abutments
- 49’-0” out to out deck
- 0° skew
To avoid delays, the construction was accomplished in stages. During Stage I, one lane of traffic was maintained by utilizing a portion of the existing structure. Then for Stage II, the portion completed during Stage I would be used to maintain the lane of traffic. To follow IDOT Bridge Manual Sec. 3.2.8 for spans exceeding 150 ft., the positive and negative moments shall be poured separately. In addition, mandatory transverse construction joints will be specified along with a deck pouring sequence, and temporary sheet piling will be designated and detailed according to the 2012 IDOT Bridge Manual. BFW is proud to be able to assist in improving the transportation infrastructure for the Illinois Department of Transportation.
