BFW was proud to provide engineering and construction services for the development of a new bicycle and pedestrian trail just north of Springfield, Illinois. This project transformed an abandoned railroad corridor into a safe and accessible multi-use path, connecting the community to new recreation opportunities.
Project Highlights
- Provided Phase II Preliminary Engineering and Phase III Construction Engineering services
- Designed a 2.0-mile, 10-foot-wide trail with HMA surface on an aggregate base
- Created a new trailhead parking lot at the north end of the project
- Trail alignment intersected four township roads in a rural setting
- Design completed in less than 5 months
- BFW performed all construction inspections and documentation
- Total project cost: $1.6 million, funded through ITEP
This trail project not only repurposed a piece of local history but also provided residents and visitors with a safe, scenic route for biking, walking, and connecting with the outdoors.
